Paying taxes is an obligation for every Kenyan more so those with a KRA pin. However, very few people understand the concept of paying taxes.

The moment you apply for a KRA pin you are supposed to start filing your returns. Some argue that they have no job or business and hence should not pay taxes.

This is not true. The filing of returns is done according to the obligation on your KRA pin certificate. There are instances you will end up with several tax obligations.

Filing of KRA returns must be done on or before the stipulated times. Each obligation has got its filing deadline. Failing to meet the deadline means that penalties will be incurred. This article will help you check your KRA penalties and make payments on the iTax portal.

Method One

How to Check & Pay KRA Penalties on iTax Portal Using Compliance Method

1. Make sure you have your KRA pin and password. If you are not sure about these, check this article on how to retrieve your KRA pin and password.

2. Log in to the iTax portal.

3. Click on certificates and then click on apply for tax compliance. You are wondering why apply for tax compliance. This is a good way to see how much you owe KRA. If you have no penalties and unpaid obligations, you will be able to proceed to the next stage to apply for Tax Compliance Certificate.

4. However, if you have penalties or pending returns you will get a message confirming the same.

5. Click ‘OK’ to view the details of pending returns and penalties.

6. A list of your pending liabilities will be displayed. Click on each liability to view the amounts. For instance, you could be having liabilities for Income Tax Partnership and VAT obligations.

7. If you wish to make payments, there is a button provided for the same. Else you can use the normal method of generating a payment slip as indicated below.

Method Two

How to Check & Pay KRA Penalties on iTax Portal Using Debt Enforcement Option

  1. Point at debt enforcement option and click on request for waiver of penalties and interests.
  2. On details of waiver section, select the obligation you wish to check. For tax type you can select interest, penalty, or both. It is good to select both.
  3. A list of penalties and fines if any are listed below.

However, note that this method is not the best. For instance, if you have an unpaid principal, you will get an error message, “You cannot initiate waiver request because for this Tax Obligation Principal/Fine is unpaid for the tax period (s)….”

Method Three

How to Check & Pay KRA Penalties on iTax Portal Using General Ledger Report

1. On the dashboard, select My Ledger. A drop down will appear, click on General Ledger Report.

2. For the Tax Head/SubHead type, you can select all.

3. For grouping, you can use group by tax obligation.

4. The account type should be Taxpayer Main Account.

5. Under transaction type select penalty.

6. When done, click on the show ledger.

7. If successful, a tab will appear on your screen with the data. Your records will show whether you have penalties or not.

How to Pay KRA Penalties and Fines via MPESA

Now that you have noted your penalties and interests, how do you pay them? Well, it is much easier to pay your KRA penalties and fines via M-PESA. Here is the process. Also, note that this is another method you can use to check your fines and interests.

1. Point at the payments tab and then click on Payment Registration.

2. Click on next on the page that appears to proceed.

3. Select the tax head (penalty type you wish to pay), select tax subhead and then click on payment type. This, in most cases, is usually Self-Assessment Tax. At this stage liability details will be displayed down below. If you wish to filter for specific dates, you can proceed and select the year and month.

4. Click on the tax period you wish to pay for. If you are paying the full amount, click on add button below. If you are paying partly, highlight the figures on the right-hand side and indicate the amount you wish to pay. Then click on add button.

5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the payment mode. Make sure you select other payments mode and click submit.

6. On the page that appears, click on the link pay now with mobile money. At this stage, if you have decided to pay via bank, you can download the payment slip.

7. After clicking on pay via mobile money, a new page appears. Select the mode of payment as Mobile Money and below Mpesa is selected automatically.

8. Enter the mobile number you wish to use to make the payment.

9. A prompt will appear on your mobile screen asking if you are the one who is making that transaction. Enter your Mpesa pin to proceed to make the payment.

10. If you are having problems paying using this automated method, just download the payment slip and pay manually. The instructions on how to pay using the pay bill number are found at the bottom.

M-Pesa: Paybill ->Business No. 572572 -> Account No. 2020220000***** -> Amount 10,000. NB: Amount should be less than 70,000 Kshs.
